Supply chain partners are commercial organisations involved in the research, development, innovation, manufacture and integration of products, devices, applications and services enabled by compound semiconductors.

Cluster profile

The above schematic shows the key elements of the CS Connected cluster.

In the centre are the elements that represent the core partners. These include the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS), the Compound Semiconductor Centre (CSC) the EPSRC Compound Semiconductor Hub and the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult. Other core partners will include incubator facilities for start-ups and FDI as well as a CS Academy that will help provide the skills and knowledge that are a feature of the highly skilled jobs that will be created by the cluster.

The next ring around the core partners represent industry partners in the form of epiwafer foundry, chip foundry, packaging capabilities and equipment/processing solutions.

The outer ring represents the supply chain that uses compound semiconductor devices across a wide range of end market applications.

Institute for Compound Semiconductors

Helping researchers and industry work together, the Institute positions Cardiff as the UK and European leader in compound semiconductors.

Compound semiconductors drive the devices and technologies we use today, from smartphones and tablets to satellite communications and GPS. The UK's need for a large-scale translational centre in compound semiconductors is being addressed with the new Institute.

Moving academic research to a point where it can be introduced reliably and quickly into the production environment, the Institute will fabricate and test technology in industrially-relevant environments.

The Institute is a crucial step in the establishment of a compound semiconductor cluster in the region. It is closely aligned with the Compound Semiconductor Centre, a joint-venture between IQE and Cardiff University.

The Compound Semiconductor Centre (CSC)

The Compound Semiconductor Centre: Led by industry and academia, for industry, the Compound Semiconductor Centre (CSC) is an innovative collaboration between IQE plc and Cardiff University to underpin the creation of a unique global capability for new and emerging 21st century technologies.

Based in Cardiff, the CSC represents a unique opportunity to build on our creativity and excellence in research to
develop an innovative eco-system to commercialise next generation opportunities, the Compound Semiconductor Centre is a vital milestone towards developing a World-class Compound Semiconductor cluster in South Wales.

The EPSRC Compound Semiconductor Hub

The EPSRC Compound Semiconductor Hub will research into large scale Compound Semiconductor manufacturing and in manufacturing integrated Compound Semiconductors on Silicon. This will radically boost the uptake and application of Compound Semiconductor technology by applying the manufacturing approaches of Silicon to Compound Semiconductors. It will also exploit the highly advantageous electronic, magnetic, optical and power handling properties of Compound Semiconductors while utilising the cost and scaling advantage of silicon technology where best suited and generate novel integrated functionality such as sensing, data processing and communication.

The Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult

The Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult focuses on helping the CS industry sector to exploit the significant advances made by UK researchers over the past two decades. This Catapult will provide translational research facilities to accelerate the commercialisation of compound semiconductors in key application areas including: healthcare, the digital economy, energy, transport, defence and security, and space.
