Semiconductor inventories are not popular despite positive quarterly reports

Investors looking for signs that the uptrend in the chip cycle may end has not received that from first-quarter earnings reports so far. However, semiconductor supplies remain unfavorable due to concerns that the cycle could turn negative soon.

Semiconductor stocks posting earnings reports for the March quarter include MaxLinear (MXL), Onsemi (ON), Qualcomm (QCOM), STMicroelectronics (STM), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) and United Microelectronics (UMC).

Meanwhile, several semiconductor stocks have outperformed their quarterly targets but have disappointed their lead for the current period. They included Intel (INTC) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore said first-quarter earnings reports are solid, but their leadership is mixed.

Macro Uncertainties Weigh On Chip Stocks

“Strength in most end markets was offset by macro uncertainties (inflation, supply problems, Covid, etc.),” Seymore said in a note to clients on Friday. On the same subject : White House warns of ‘escalating weakness’ for US semiconductor failure. “Administrative tones have remained generally confident of demand albeit with growing caution around Covid-related stops in China.”

Lack of chips persists and supply-demand balance has yet to be addressed, Seymore said. “But the tension seems to be easing a little bit.”

Fears of a near-peak cycle persist, he said. This helps explain why semiconductor stocks have not risen much from quarterly reports.

Sales of automotive and communications chips grew more than expected in the first quarter. But sales of computer chips have weakened.

“Semi-sentiment is appalling and declining due to fears of a cyclical slowdown and tax cuts as consumer spending on phones and computers slows massively due to rising inflation and a huge advance during Covid,” Klein said in a note to clients on Thursday.

He said the shutdowns of factories in relation to Covid-19 in China had made the situation worse by upsetting the supply chain.

“Most investors just want to hate sowing now,” Klein said in a subsequent note on Friday. “I remain cautious about almost every half more due to concerns about a cycle slowdown and a lack of visibility in consumer demand for Q3 further.”
