Modern technology gives us many things.

Connecting MIT students with leading women in semiconductors

Kim Vo’98, SM ’99, corporate vice president at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), joined the semiconductor industry for three reasons. “First of all, it’s really cool technology; it is progressive. The second is all the products we create: they touch everyone, ”he said in a recent MIT talk. “And the third reason is because just like at MIT, I get to work with some of the wisest people in the world.”

Vo revealed her motivation during her keynote presentation at the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) Women’s Leadership Initiative (GSA) networking event, co-sponsored by MIT.nano and held at MIT on April 6. entitled “ Designing the Solution, ”the two-hour session brought together MIT female engineering students and women in leadership roles at GSA member companies to discuss career opportunities for women in hard technology.

“Events like these are unique in their importance and mission,” said MIT Professor Asu Ozdaglar, head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computing and deputy dean of academics at MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. “It captures the talents and wisdom of female leaders who have risen to the top ranks of the semiconductor industry. Their experiences provide inspiration and insights that are sure to inspire the next generation of female leaders, scientists and engineers. ”

Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) Solution Design at MIT

Vo, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in materials science and engineering at MIT, opened the event with an overview of current projects at AMD and a narrative of how it got to where it is today. She advised current MIT undergraduate and graduate women to rely on four pillars for success: continuous learning, partnering with everyone, finding sponsors, and having fun.

The afternoon proceeded with a panel discussion featuring Elif Doğruer, senior product marketing specialist at Infineon Technologies; Eve Borden, senior manager of the lithography process division at GlobalFoundries; Amrita Anbarasu, SoC [on-chip system] design engineer at Intel; Kari Crane, DRAM design engineer at Micron Technology; and moderator Namrata Sharma, leader of global, semiconductor partner at Amazon Web Services.

Speakers shared their career paths, highlighting the wide variety of roles in the semiconductor industry that are not always the first ones to come to mind – sales and marketing, foundry management, and design engineering. They talked about moving up the corporate ladder, the transition from academia to the workforce, and what a typical day is like for them.

“The biggest difference I’ve noticed when transitioning from student to engineer in the semiconductor industry is that you have to keep up with the knowledge curve,” said Anbarasu. “Make sure you apply all that you learned in school. And also, realize that you are part of a product development that actually goes out in the ecosystem and creates impact. That’s pretty cool. ”

Following the panel discussion, students were invited to meet with representatives from AMD, AWS, GlobalFoundries, Infineon, Intel, and Micron. This event was one of a series organized by the GSA Women’s Leadership Initiative and held at universities across the country to highlight the global impact of a career in semiconductors and recruit more women into the hard technology ecosystem.

“Have fun and enjoy your journey,” said Vo. “Don’t stress about making the wrong decision … It’s okay if you’re taking a job and it’s not where you want to be; you can change it. Don’t worry – if you find something you love and are determined, you’re going to succeed, whatever that success may be to you. “
